The journey back was proving to be a lot faster than the way there. At this rate they’d make it back in almost half the time it took to get there. Vidar had allowed the group to take two horses with them, horses their village had raised and bred. Benji shared a horse with Rae, while Seren rode with Torin. Benji was exhausted from travel, and struggling to keep up with the pace Torin was setting for the group. No one dared to complain, as the fierce warrior seemed to be on a war path, ready to kill anyone who dared question him. Even the way he walked was tense, as if he expected danger at all moments.

“He does know how to relax, right?” Rae whispered. Benji gave a nervous laugh, afraid Torin might hear them. “I guess this is what happens when you’re raised in an ice tundra, never seeing the rest of the world.” Rae shrugged.

They were well into the Black Forest. Benji had suggested they aim for Atarah again and stay there a night, but both Seren and Torin argued against it. The pair were both paranoid. They didn’t want to attract the attention of others, nor did they trust anyone besides themselves.

Instead, the group was aiming for Lake Tellus, a small lake set to the north west of Veena. They would enter the city from the north rather than the west where Benji and Rae had left from. It would add a day of travel to their journey, but Torin insisted it was worth it.

They were already two days into travel, and they only made short stops to sleep a few hours. At this pace, they would be back in Veena by day four. As they rode, Benji caught glimpses of Torin in awe as he took in the world around him. Growing up surrounded by ice, Benji assumed this must come as a shock to him that the world was not covered in snow.

“Why is this place so insufferably warm?” Torin questioned, speaking for the first time in a bit.

“What do you mean?” Benji asked. He was still freezing, as winter was fully approaching in Apricus. Any day now snow storms would make their way across the lands and leave them covered for months.

“It’s much warmer here than it was in my village,” he shrugged. If all he was used to was freezing weather, Benji couldn’t blame him for thinking this was warm. He laughed a bit to himself, thinking about what Torin would think of summer.

“Don’t be such a baby,” Rae teased. “I didn’t take you as a complainer.”

“I wasn’t complaining.” Benji watched as he scowled at them. “I was merely making an observation.”

“Sure you were,” Rae dragged the words out.

Benji gave her arm a gentle pinch, trying to hint at her to stop. Angering Torin did them no good. They were stuck with him now, whether they liked it or not.

Soon night came, and the group made camp to rest. Only two more days and he’d be home.
